valentine´s day

• saint valentine´s day, commonly shortened to valentine´s day, is a holiday observed on february 14 honoring one or more early christian martyrs named saint valentine. it is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").
• the day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of geoffrey chaucer in the high middle ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. it was first established by pope gelasius i in 496 ad, and was later deleted from the general roman calendar of saints in 1969 by pope paul vi.
• modern valentine´s day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged cupid. since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

国外情人节的由来和习俗
名字的由来:

古代庆祝情人节的习俗与华伦泰拉上关系,其实 纯属巧合而已.事实上,这个节日很可能与古罗 马的牧神节或雀鸟交配的季节有关.情人节的特 色是情侣互相赠送礼物.时至今日,人们则喜欢 以情人卡表意.情人卡上通常绘有丘比特,给箭 射中心等等.
习俗
不同的时代,过情人节的习俗有所不同.其实从1837~1901年英 国维多利亚女王时期的情人节最为独特:2月14日这一天,一对 对情人,将一株生有两朵含苞待放的花蕾的春枝移植在特制的 盆内.花名的第一个字母必须与这对情人一姓名的第一个字母 吻合.几天后,如果这春枝上的双蕾怒放,交相辉映,便预示这对 情人白首偕老;如果双蕾各分东西,相北吐蕊,这对情人终将劳 燕分飞;如果开的硕大,灿烂,表示以后子孙满堂,阖家欢乐;倘若 一花枯萎凋谢,情人中的一人有早夭之险.在白金汉郡还曾盛行 在情人节之夜祈祷的风习:点燃一枚蜡烛,插入两枚细针,从烛 地查到烛心,默念自己爱人的名字,祈祷相爱始终,待到蜡烛燃 至针底,据说所爱之人便会叩扉而至.还有个情人节习俗:在情 人节前一周内连续七夜将左脚上袜子脱下传到右脚上个,反复 许愿;愿我心爱人儿能进入今宵梦境.据说,这是月老就会抛下 一根吉利的大红丝线.还有将袜子脱下绕在颈项祈爱
