EFFECTS OF TRIETHYLAMINE UPON CELLULAR EVENTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANTENNA OF BRACON HEBETOR..pdf
- Parthenogenetically produced male third instar larvae of the ectoparasitic wasp B. hebetor are exposed to 50 (mu)l of triethylamine (TEA) for 2 minutes in air. The exposure is lethal to half of the larvae and 33% of the survivors have malformed antennae with reduction in number of segments. Effects at a cellular level are investigated. Cell death was quantitated by in vitam staining with neutral red. pH was tested by dissection under phenol red solution. Larvae were fed or injected with colchicine to determine mitotic index (MI). Standard techniques for TEM and SEM are used for ultrastructural analysis. Internal pH is elevated for 5 hours after TEA. Cell doubling time is 12 hours. Cell size remains constant except in treated buds from 76-96 hours, when diameter is reduced. Rate of growth of treated buds (56-76 hours) and mean size (76-96 hours) are reduced.
