In the current study, an effort is made to determine three dimensional bearing capacity of a shallow foundation adjacent to a slope using discrete element method. The soil mass under the footing is modeled as discrete blocks connected with a set of normal and shear springs called Winkler springs. In order to define the geometry of the failure surface of the soil, six independent angles are considered, which will be obtained by trial and error. So, the failure surface is not fixed and can be changed by different characters. The purpose of the paper is to determine the three dimensional bearing capacity coefficients of rectangular foundations which are placed adjacent to a slope. In order to get to such a scope a discrete element program called BCAP3D (Bearing capacity analysis program in 3D) is employed. The result is presented in relative graphs, versus the ratio (), for each foundation aspect ratio (). Besides, a comparison is made between the current method with other methods used in the same field.
